Week 11: Setup/Sketch

So boring.  Clearly, because I’ve had this sketch since the episode aired and am only now posting it. “Red Carpet” means “pretty dress”. What-ever.  I mean, traditionally, kind of awesome, but that’s history all crammed together. And there’s like a million kinds of red carpet. Anyway.  We’re going to interpret this as “inoffensive dress”. I’m doing it in crayon yellow though.

Week 7: Finished!

No pattern was needed for this, all pleating “math”.  This is the shortest time I’ve taken so far and one of my favourite looks.  What I think this tells me is that I really just like making stuff, more than clothes. For materials I went with fiberglass screening, garbage bags, astroturf and a Velcro closure (you can totally buy hook & loop closures at hardware stores).  Also, I am highly considering making an endless amount of bell shaped crins and little skirts and always having skirts this poufy, it is…

Week 5: Finished!

Ugh, I am sick of “make a pretty dress” challenges.  I deviated from my sketch out of boredom and nearly ennui’d myself into sewing a shit pile.  No more zippers ever.  Is that okay?  After this any pretty dress challenge is going to get the sewing equivalent of cold connections.  Here’s my pattern plot for the dress.  I didn’t even thumbnail sketch the changed idea, I just went straight to the pattern, as is my normal way of doing things: So, eye catching and spring.  How’s pink and bright blue? …

Week 5: Setup/Sketch

The challenge this week was to make a dress that would be worn by Heidi Klum for April 2010 cover of Marie Claire.  Designers were reminded that it’s three seconds for a consumer to see and decide whether to buy an issue at the news stand, so the dress had to be eye-catching. Can I make a confession?  I do not think I’ve ever read Marie Claire.  It’s rated in my mind as like, a hip mom fashion mag.  I read W for my pretty picture needs and I think…

Week 4: Finished!

This challenge has been finished since the 10th, but a trip to the coast interfered with my posting schedule.  I got a couple of quick shots of the dress on Amanda during lunch at work: So, instead of a heart-disease survivor who will wear the dress on the red carpet we have a single lady who will wear the dress while bieng her dark fairy self.  At karaoke, if you need it to be fancy. Problems: 1. I suck at sleeves and need to take in the armhole some.  It’s…
