Week 4: Pattern/Fitting

The actual form of this dress is very simple.  There’s an over-dress layered over the same shape under, black-brown over red. I waited ages for the other apartments to be done with the dryer so I could do the final rinse and dry of the length of fabric I’d dyed red.  Giving up, I cut out and sewed what will be the over-dress, still undyed.  I was filled with total terror about the fitting, OMiG foreign measurements!  During our break at work I got Amanda in it and marked what…

Week 4: Setup/Sketch

After the pain in my ass that was week three, I am looking forward to this challenge.  It’s a “real woman” one, the tear-jerking twist being that they’ve all been impacted by heart disease, the sponsor tie-in being that they’ve got to work Campbell Soup’s logo and whatnot in.  As the winning look barely used the Campbell-branded fabric (which I do not have access to), I’m not going to overly concern myself with the last bit.  The first part I totally have down. A co-worker of mine, Amanda (who is…

Week 2: Finished!

I wanted something totally flippy and ridic.  The setting was “modelling industry party”, so I figured on making the skirt shorter as well.  To work the legs, etc.  I have to give Chase some credit here, he said “you know what could go with burlap? Gold lamé. The plaid-ish fabric was salvaged from this insane shirt Chase has had in his closet for years.  I’m using it as my embellishment and lining for the skirt and cowl, which I feel remains in the spirit of the challenge.  The panels of…

Week 2: Progress

I’d originally thought that the contestants’ fabric was limited to the dimensions of a burlap bag.  Laying out my pattern pieces the other night I realised that must be false, as a basic dress shape takes up the majority of the yardage, leaving little extra for the fripperies that were so popular last episode. Thank goodness for that.  Boo, however, to no muslin lining or stabiliser.  I have a plan, however. I cut out the fabric while watching Trailer Park Boys and cursed myself for what appears to be some…
