Week 5: Setup/Sketch

The challenge this week was to make a dress that would be worn by Heidi Klum for April 2010 cover of Marie Claire.  Designers were reminded that it’s three seconds for a consumer to see and decide whether to buy an issue at the news stand, so the dress had to be eye-catching. Can I make a confession?  I do not think I’ve ever read Marie Claire.  It’s rated in my mind as like, a hip mom fashion mag.  I read W for my pretty picture needs and I think…

Week 4: Setup/Sketch

After the pain in my ass that was week three, I am looking forward to this challenge.  It’s a “real woman” one, the tear-jerking twist being that they’ve all been impacted by heart disease, the sponsor tie-in being that they’ve got to work Campbell Soup’s logo and whatnot in.  As the winning look barely used the Campbell-branded fabric (which I do not have access to), I’m not going to overly concern myself with the last bit.  The first part I totally have down. A co-worker of mine, Amanda (who is…

I aim for comfortable for me, not others

Though I’ve been capable of sewing my own clothes since eighth grade, I don’t often do it. As someone who balks at paying five dollars for a t-shirt, I’m not always inclined to pay six dollars a yard and hours of my time to sew basic layering items. But I do like to make things. There is something nice about telling people admiring your dress that you made it yourself. Making something that is definitely not what I could find in shops in Portland is also kind of great. I…

“Studio” is being overly polite

I believe I was only a couple of years into college when I realised that I had to have a sewing machine. I’d grown up with a monstrous Singer and cupboards overflowing with prints whose scarcity I wouldn’t appreciate until years later. My little machine, scored for under a hundred dollars at a super-department store, can’t do all the rad things that the Singer did, but it straight stitches, zig zags and does blind hem, which is really all I need. (click through to Flickr for notes) I insisted, when…

Who does not love talking about their clothes?

Since Project Runway contestants showed off a little bit of their closets, I figured I’d do the same. We have a teensy bedroom closet and the limited space keeps me in line, making sure that what I have is what I use. I’m crazy into layering, so all of my different knit tops are arranged by sleeve length, stacked onto a shelf. I wish I could hang everything, but I just don’t have the space. Lately I’ve been shooting outfit-of-the-day (OOTD) pictures. It’s kept me even more aware of what…
